FindEdit

Sound effects are grouped in these categories: Animal sounds, Body/mouth sounds, Environmental.

  • Animal sounds are arranged by the animal name. All cat sounds are together, for example.
  • Body/mouth sounds are arranged in alphabetical order.
  • Environmental sounds are arranged in alphabetical order, and are sounds that aren't produced by the body. Cars, for example.

You can search for the translation of a specific sound effect using your web browser's Find function. For many languages, you can press Ctrl+F(⌘+F on Mac, STRG+F in German Windows) or choose Edit/Find in the menu. If you want an animal sound, search for the animal name.

Some sound effects may not be suitable for children. Since it's unlikely a child would need this site, we're more interested in having a complete dictionary.

EditEdit

We encourage you to add other popular sound effects and complete any unfinished entries(the entries with a question mark). Just click "edit" at the top of the page or the top of that section(preferred).

If the origin language of this page isn't English, please translate it. Example: Español-inglés should have headers, original words, and notes in Spanish.

There are many similar entries. This is to keep things easy to find and in order. If you're looking for "thump" and it's with "bonk", that just adds confusion. Plus, the small differences might require different translations.

  • Each entry begins with a semicolon(;). Here's an example of the code... ;bam (loud impact): pum
  • If there are extra variations, create a new entry that starts with a ":;" and clarify the differences... :;bam (from gun): pum

If you're doing a lot of editing, we recommend copying your text to you computer's clipboard or a word processing program in case an error occurs. For most languages, you can select all of the text, then hold down the CTRL or ⌘(Macintosh) key while you press C. To insert what you just copied, hold down the CTRL or ⌘ key while you press V. In German, the CTRL key is STRG. If this doesn't work in your language and you don't know the alternative, take a class for computers.

If there's a comic or illustration that uses the translated sound effect, share an example! After the translated word, just put the address of the example page in brackets, like this: [http://url]. It will look like this, with the appropriate number: [1]. Please link to the web page the comic is on, not just the image. You can have more than one example for a translation if it helps. Also, put a space between the word and the link.

In addition, it's okay to link to detailed dictionary entries. Word Reference is good, sentence/site translation like Google Translations and Babel Fish are not. The entry MUST say what circumstances to use the word in, like when surprised or in reaction to something, for example.
